Support and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s).

Check out some of our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) to get more familiar with what we offer and what capabilities are available to you.

What defines a Virtual Private Network?

A VPN, short for Virtual Private Network, is a way to connect your internet to an encrypted network server to establish extra security. This service provides more privacy as it conceals your online activity from your Internet Service Provider, or ISP, and other agents such as schools, work, or the government. You can bypass proxies put in place by businesses while still protecting yourself from those who wish to do harm. You can download files from trusted sources with more confidence. With a VPN, you can visit websites from around the globe that may have restrictions in your own country.

A VPN also hides your IP address (an IP address, short for Internet Protocol, is officially defined as “a unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network”). An IP is like a zip code for your device but just like your zip code changes when you move about and travel, so does your IP.

What about changing your location on Google?

Google offers a feature that provides localized search results so that they are in line with your physical location. For example, if you’re in Phoenix and search for something like ‘hair color’, your search results will pick up on the Phoenix area and will offer a list of salons near you along with websites. If you do not want these traceable results, you can use the website “isearchfrom.com” to choose your location and search as if you were there. Say you want to search for something for your family in Mexico but you are located in Canada. You can use that site to find the results pertinent to Mexico but helpful for you. Using a VPN on top of this will help clear those channels quickly.

What about using a Free VPN for Skype?

Skype is a tool developed by Microsoft that is used to connect with people all over the world via messaging, audio calls, and most popularly, video calls. Many people use it to speak with their family and friends or even to connect for business purposes. Unfortunately, Skype has had a few security breaches of their own. It’s one of the most popular tools to communicate and because of that, it’s also a bigger target for hackers. Skype works with an internet connection and using a VPN can help offset that worry and provide the security you deserve. Your calls will remain private and the communication you are sending out will be untraceable to your device. You shouldn’t have to worry about a threat to your privacy when chatting with loved ones. Using our free VPN servers to connect should eliminate those fears.

I sometimes download torrents. Should I use a VPN?

If you download torrents, a VPN is an excellent albeit necessary tool to ensure that you are kept safe from malware. A torrent is a shared download that you can get from specific hosting sites such as uTorrent or BitTorrent. Downloads can include files, programs, software, and media like music and movies. Obviously, these are all risky items as you have to trust that they are virus free and from reputable sources. Because they are downloads, they can also be tracked.

Thankfully we’ve thought of these concerns and have ensured that our VPN accounts not only run smoothly, quickly, and securely, they also check any torrents that you download for malware or viruses. We make keeping both your IP and device safe are number one priority.

Can I use a Free VPN for online streaming?

Just like torrents, streaming can open up your device to many different types of malware and put you into an unsavory part of the web. There are definitely many safe and legal sources to choose from, but they may still be tracking what you’re doing. However, many of them use these services to gain access to you and your device. If you’re using a VPN to connect to their services, you are essentially blocking them and redirecting their attempts to get your information. Your device and IP address will not be accessible to them and any attempts to send something harmful will be blocked.

Additionally, using a VPN can bypass country restrictions and allow you to stream media from places around the world. For example, if there is a video from the United Kingdom that you would like to view but are located in the United States, you can use a VPN to make it appear that you are located in the U.K. and therefore bypass their restrictions. This can be especially useful if you’re looking for an educational program or resource and are unable to access it otherwise.

What is censorship and how is it still prevalent in the modern world?

Censorship is a way to suppress media that is deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds. It is essentially controlling information on subjective grounds. Many people think of governments censoring media (as they’ve done so in some way, shape, or form throughout the world for many centuries). However, businesses, organizations, and the media all have the ability to do so and may also abuse this power. Social media is an example of an organization censoring some accounts or posts that they deem unacceptable to their platform. Another example is politically charged news organizations who want to coax their viewers.

It can be used to influence people and to even protect criminals from general public knowledge of their actions. Some countries like North Korea censor the government to keep their citizens away from gaining access to viewing the rest of the world. It’s a way to control the people. The goal of these places is to keep their power by restricting education and access. A VPN can allow you to bypass these restrictions and make it appear as if you’re in another country.

Can I change my iPhone device location?

One of the features of the iPhone is the ability to use GPS tracking. This can be used to send your location to others via text should you get lost. You can also sync it with apps to track your workouts, traffic directions, and weather. You can also take advantage of this service with your social media and photographs as it geotags where the photo or post was made. But there are likely to be times where you don’t want your information tracked or stored.

You can “jailbreak” your phone and access more sites. Jailbreaking a phone is the process of installing software on a computer that you transfer to your phone that will open up the phone’s system. People do this to change the look of their phones, access more content that the manufacturer and phone carrier have restricted, and to download apps that aren’t available through the app store. However, doing this usually breaks your warranty with your carrier so be aware.

If you do this, you can use apps that fake your location, such as the “LocationFaker” app. From there, you can change your location as you please.

What are proxy servers and how are they used?

A proxy server is a web based service that also hides your IP address and transfers communication to another security system so that the information you’re sending and receiving online is kept confidential. However, this system only works for web browsing and not apps or other computer software. Additionally, some websites will not allow you access as they’ve implemented systems that check specifically for proxy servers.

Another thing to note about proxy servers is they will go through your history and search for any cached items when you visit a website. They track these sites so that they can run faster each time you visit. If you visit a new site, the server will search for it first, determine it can’t be found, request access to the site, then cache the site on their server. While this can be a great tool to keep your browsing safe, be aware that there are limitations.

What are internet cookies, what are they used for, and are they safe?

Have you ever browsed a website and gotten a message regarding cookies? Sometimes the message will simply mention that the site you are visiting tracks cookies. Other times it will ask you to accept that the site is tracking cookies in order to gain access. But what is it? A cookie is a set of small files that are stored on a user’s computer to better serve you the next time you visit the site. It can store information such as language and location to ensure a better experience when you visit. It also keeps you logged in to sites as you browse. The point of cookies is to provide personalization and convenience.

There are drawbacks of course. While this may be acceptable to some users, others may find it to be invasive and unacceptable to track and monitor someone so closely. It can be used as a trail. In fact, some speculate that the term “cookie” was inspired by the Hansel and Gretel story of the children who left bread or “cookie” crumbs to find their way. Similarly, this feature that many sites use is a way to track you. However, cookies don’t have the capabilities of messing up your system, allowing hackers in, or installing viruses. They are there to get a limited amount of information that helps them run their services more efficiently. If this still makes you uncomfortable, you can always clear out your cookies through your browser.

How do you browse the web anonymously?

It’s nearly impossible to live life with no internet presence whatsoever. Even if you don’t personally use it, records such as those for medical, school, taxes, and birth/death services are maintained online. While you may not be able to control that, you can control your own browsing experience. You can use a VPN to block your IP and encrypt data that is coming and going to/from you.

You can also use services that offer anonymous services such as Tor network. Through Tor Network, you can scramble the flow of the data you are sending and receiving. The originator, or device that requests access to a site cannot be traced due to devices and nodes that it must pass through first.

However, the tried and true method that works across multiple services and levels is the VPN. It secures your device and history on multiple levels, providing the best and highest level of protection and value.
